Helping Ukraine’s Animals

March 12, 2022

Dear Friends,

Ukraine abandoned animals.
Some of Ukraine’s abandoned dogs.

Ukraine is very much on our minds now — and as animal lovers, we are all concerned about what is happening to the animals in that war zone. On the news, we witness much compassion by people carrying their cats, dogs, and other companion animals on the arduous trek to reach safety. But, we rarely see the many animals left behind, the strays, or those in shelters and zoos in the country.

We have been asked by several of our supporters to suggest ways to help the animals of Ukraine. After some research, we have come up with some organizations that we believe are able to help and have an easier donation process. Others within the country have complex processes that do not support any method we can use from the U. S., and we advise against mailing a check, considering the situation there.

The charities below accept credit cards or PayPal.

Though many Ukranians were able to take their animals with them, many remained in the war zone.

Eurogroup for Animals
A European umbrella charity, Eurogroup and its members set up a taskforce to identify needs, coordinate efforts and share information regarding companion animals, abandoned animals, and animal shelters affected by the war in Ukraine. Additional Ways You Can Help Ukraine Animals from betterpet.com
The best way to help support the Ukrainian people and pets is to support organizations that are actively accepting and distributing donations to front-line workers and those affected by the war. Here betterpet.com lists numerous agencies who help animals left behind, displaced pet families, and animal shelters whose brave and dedicated staff struggle to care for the animals in the face of danger.
